Apr. 13th, 2024 11:03 pmSo, I went to the judo club's UFC party this evening.
The reason we were having this event was because one of the competitors was Kayla Harrison, an Olympic judo champion. She's a 6th dan black belt, but now she's doing MMA.
I've heard that MMA fighters who are skilled at judo can use it to their advantage - not because these techniques are better than others per se, but because judo throws etc aren't as common in MMA as other techniques, so they can come as a surprise and opponents might not know how to counter them. Harrison's fight was a pretty quick one. She did end up using some judo techniques on her opponent, and that was really cool to see. But if I'll be honest, I'm not much of a MMA person, and I would've rather just watched some straight-up judo.
Stayed for a few other rounds, then left early. I couldn't stay for the whole thing - just had too much to do, including in the evening.
It did remind me that I'm kind of curious about judo in the upcoming Olympics. It'd be cool to watch it. Maybe we could even put together a watch party for that? But I'm unsure about how to do that - we'd need to find a way to stream it. I'm sure it's possible, but would need to research.
