Holy shit, ep 07!
I was pretty much spoilered for this to hell and back from the moment it dropped, since I flatmeme on FFA and I'm terrible about skipping over the YOI threads even if I know that I shouldn't read them... But, anyway. OH MAN. WHAT AN EP.
Yuuri and Victor were pretty interesting in this one. ...I mean aside from that thing everyone is talking about. It's interesting to see them working on their issues; how Yuuri has so much anxiety, and how Victor has so little coaching experience, and how it all comes together well enough in the end. I really liked that moment when Victor realized that Yuuri needed to get to a quieter place - and then helped him with that.
...And of course, everything during Yuuri's actual FS sequence was amazing. :D Of course, I love any ep with lots of skating, but that was great - the way he switched the quad plans at the end...! *_*
And then the kiss. I just - you know, when I started watching this series, I didn't want to be too optimistic, because I don't like being disappointed, and I tend to be perfectly satisfied by friendship narratives anyway. But that was--
Okay, you know, I don't even ship these two that intensely. But it made me really happy to see that. It isn't very often that I see something like that. And I've been feeling kind of suffocated and closeted lately, I guess, so it was just... It was really nice to see it.
(Of course, there are people out there saying it totally wasn't a kiss, but those people are nutso.)
...And that's all I have to say about Yuuri and Victor for now, really. Aside from that of course I'm looking forward to what comes next. (Good luck turning Yuuri into borscht, Yurio. IN YOUR DREAMS maybe.)
I'm glad that, once again, we got to see so much of the other skaters! AND THEY WERE AWESOME. Especially Guang Hong - we were kind of shafted on his performance previously, which was really disappointing, because I would have loved to see it. But he really shines here! I SWEAR, I must have rewatched his sequence like 7 times!
SOMEBODY NEEDS TO WRITE THIS GANGSTER AU, OKAY. I don't even like AUs, but right now I want like 6340989 iterations of this. Or fanart, actually, fanart would be even better. Because this whole thing is just - oh man. WHAT AN ADORABLE LITTLE BADASS. Not to mention, HE TAKES A BULLET FOR LEO. AAAAAHHHHHHH
Some time over the course of the past week I ended up shipping Leo/Guang Hong pretty hard and I... uh... well, this episode was very good to me, let's just say. Pffff. Now I want so much fic with them... especially if like, there are a ton of FEELINGS, and there's a whole load of "I don't know whether my feelings are reciprocal" stuff, but they actually ARE, and then something ~develops~ and... something-something the difficulties of young hearts and long-distance relationships but somehow it works out anyway and all the while, they become more experienced in their skills!
...Alternately, the two of them consoling one another over their results would be lovely. xD
Anyway.
AND NOW I MUST TALK ABOUT PHICHIT. BECAUSE PHICHIT. Ahhhh his performance was SO GOOD. I just loved it, I could watch it so many times. *_*
I know that, narratively, we're prooobably going to see Yuuri win the Grand Prix final, but not even gonna lie, it would bring me so much joy if Phichit won. I WANT HIM TO GO ALL THE WAY TO THE TOP.
(How the hell am I this invested in fictional figure skating competitions?!)
I think with him re: his craft, what I like most is that he's so - what he's doing is unprecedented, and he's of course aware of it, and he is just so motivated to push that as far as he can go, to bring not only himself but all of Thailand up to the top, in a way. He's skilled and determined! And it makes me just really want him to win, not gonna lie.
As for the rest, well - pffff Georgi, what the hell was that?! Needs more glitter and eye makeup, not gonna lie. Not to mention, dude needs to Elsa it up a little. Let it go, let it gooo... (I mean, I understand that feel, bad breakups suck, but - man...) Also, how hilarious is it that he's the villain in Guang Hong's imaginary gangster AU? I've seen some suggesting that it should be Victor or Christophe, but I think Georgi is fitting, seeing as, y'know, his Carabosse sequence was actually pretty intimidating - not to mention, he has the sort of appearance that could be easily transformed into something scary (tall + that deep voice, well...)
Anyway. Yesss good ep, lots of fun stuff in it for everyone, I do think. REALLY EXCITED about the next episode though, especially since apparently we'll meet my man JJ! AHHHH SO EXCITED (I do hope I won't end up disliking him, orz.)

Date: 2016-11-18 02:41 am (UTC)I also noticed a lot of good interactions between the skaters and their coaches this episode (which was probably deliberate, to show how Yuuri and Victor have a ways to go) but I've enjoyed seeing those. It seems like the more experienced coaches know just how to motivate/support/comfort their skaters, and Victor is still working out how to do that. Anyway, I found the contrast interesting.
*goes back to squeeing for days about that kiss*

Date: 2016-11-18 01:17 pm (UTC)Hmm, when you frame it that way, maybe it would be feasible for him to get all the way to the GPF, but not win, and still find himself happy with that because in the process he's won Victor's affection and they've figured out how to work together as a team and as two people in a relationship, blah blah. (And then Phichit can win the GPF and we can get the ending we want, too. ;p )
Also good eye re: the other skaters and their coaches. I noticed that too. :D Fff, Ciao Ciao in particular is really growing on me, I guess because he and Phichit work together so well. <3
