I was going to write something intelligent (maybe), but let's do this instead.

Just Finished: The Fellowship of the Ring by J R R Tolkien. Someone suggested re-reading LOTR, and I figured, ehhh why not. I haven't read the series since I was 14 or so, so it was pretty much like reading it for the first time. Anyway, 's good times, and I'm looking forward to reading the rest of it. One thing that did stick out is that I recalled a lot of people saying they disliked the Tom Bombadill bit, and often skipped it. So, I was preparing for that section to be a bit of a slog, but I actually didn't mind it at all; I rather liked Tom, actually. (And Goldberry! <3) Sure, it's an odd little interlude, but not bothersome, especially since it's at the beginning, when things don't seem quite too terrible.

Also Finished: China: A History by John Keay. Not much to say here. I wanted a broad historical overview, because watching NiF made me realize that I know roughly zilch about China. After this, I still know very little about China, but I do know more than zero, so I'll consider that ~mission accomplished~. This isn't one to read if you're interested in 20th-century history, or if you want to look at any particular period in detail, but it did exactly what I wanted it to do.

Reading Next: Following up Fellowship, I'll be tackling The Two Towers next. But I think I might also cleanse my palate with a bit of poetry. The question is, which poetry? I have a volume of Tomas Tranströmer's work around somewhere. And also some Rolf Jacobsen that I haven't read, I think (though for the life of me, I can't remember where I put that one). Also some Jan Zwicky; Thirty-seven Small Songs and Thirteen Silences, which I'm very much looking forward to reading, whenever that will be. And Gregory Scofield's Witness, I Am - though as much as I love his work, the subject matter of that one is very heavy (it's about the MMIW crisis), so perhaps another time....

I haven't been to the library in two weeks or so, because I honestly couldn't be assed to go downtown, so instead I'm trying to read the stacks of books I have in my room, instead of rolling around like a lump and moaning "I HAVE NOTHING TO READ" while surrounded by unread books.
