ESC semifinal 1 was today! I had it on while I was at work, so I didn't get to concentrate on the performances much, but at least I could listen to the songs.

Very happy that Iceland, Norway, Moldova, and Ukraine made it through to the final.

As far as the strictly music part goes, Iceland's entry was my top fave. I love country 'n western music when it's done well, and this one was a flavour of it that used to be more popular but is almost completely absent in mainstream country these days. It was just lovely!

Norway's entry was exactly the kind of nonsense that I watch Eurovision for. So, there's that.

Moldova and Ukraine's acts were both doing musically-cool things that I don't really have the vocabulary to describe. But yeah, good stuff there. (& I was happy to see an entry from ZSZ again - I don't follow their stuff on the regular, but I liked their 2011 entry a lot.)

The only entry that I kind of liked that didn't make it through was Bulgaria's dad rock, but that's all right. I'll live. :P

Looking forward to semifinal 2!

Norway, Moldova, and Ukraine were definitely my top songs of this semi-final! There seems to be a lot of country/western and cowboy themes this year. I find it surprising that kind of music/theme is so popular in Europe, but then I wonder if I should be. 🤣

That's a great point about the lack of baggage/associations. An entire ocean between continents creates a lot of distance, and can just leave the allure of the style and aesthetic.
