Our judo club doesn't have a permanent dojo; we use a school gym. This week, the school needed the gym on the nights we have class, so we moved classes for this week. Long class was tonight.
Attending: Me, J-kun, J-chan, K-kun, Se, Si. Sensei instructing.
Groundwork for all of today. Worked first on techniques to get past someone's guard, and secondly on techniques to get someone on their back when they're in your guard.
Getting past guard was simple in practice; grab pants, pin knees down, grab the lapel, move past the legs, get your hands behind to pin. But once we moved to randori... uh. Well, doing it while actually moving is tricky, and I wasn't able to complete the process even once.
Getting someone out of your guard - we tried two types for that. The first one, you grab your opponent by a sleeve (with both hands), bring that sleeve to the opposite side, then roll them over. This gives an opportunity to pin/submit/choke. Second one, that was the scissor sweep; we've covered that one before, but it's been quite a while since we worked on it. Grab sleeve and lapel, shrimp out, bring knee up high, pull your opponent in, and then use leverage from your legs to flip them over. I like that one, it's fun, but I had some issues with doing it - there were some points where I didn't get the technique right, and my knees didn't like what I was doing.
I was paired with J-chan for most of it, aside from a brief period during randori where I went with someone else. Second class for her; she seems to be having a really good time, which is great. Even though she hasn't been doing this long, she's quite a challenge for me; I'm happy about that - it'll be good to have more partner options. (Well, I can go with anyone, but it's easier when the size is a more even match.)
