☆ I hadn't mentioned, but I've been back home for a few days now! Victoria in November is great; the weather was awesome - around +10C the entire time. It felt so freeing to be able to go around in just a fleece sweater, no proper jacket or anything. So, I'll be considering more autumn vacations in the future....

☆ Like I mentioned previously, the ballet performance was amazing. I can't say how Moscow Ballet's Swan Lake compares to other interpretations of this title, but I would totally see it again if the opportunity came up. Now I'm kind of curious about their Nutcracker - that's the other one that they do on their tours. Perhaps next year?

☆ Unnnfortunately, I think I'm coming down with a cold. I probably caught it on the plane or... at the airport or - well, I suppose it doesn't matter where I caught it. But I'm certainly not well pleased. Luckily catch-up at work hasn't been too bad, otherwise I would be having a rough time, I think.

☆ My company is switching over to a new version of their health insurance (or something to that effect - trying to be vague here) and man, fussing with that is such a pain, setting up my account for the new website and so on. I always feel like this technical stuff is so difficult for me to understand. Though the discussion about this did remind me that we are able to claim massage therapy on our work insurance. I... might need to consider that. Work leaves me feeling so sore sometimes! And it's possible that it could help with the problems I'm having with my hands, too.

☆ I have been researching bits and bites about medieval literature and manuscripts for fic purposes, and oh man, it's giving me such a craving... I can't remember where all of my Arthurian books are, but I should try to dig them up. I'm sure they're somewhere in my room. It's been ages since I've read anything in Middle English! This just will not do. ;)

☆ I am not going to allow myself to start ANY new stories until I finish the four things I have in active drafts right now. I mean it! No matter how tempting it is to start something new. (Will I hold to this? Who knows. ;p )

☆ Inko drew some angsty Kalmar Den/Nor and since I keep staring at it I figure I might as well slap the link here. Voila. Ahhh I love it. :') I should commission her again some time in the new year, that one she did for me this summer was so good.

☆ Oh, I almost forgot. Book haul from Victoria:
+ The Half-Finished Heaven: Selected Poems - Tomas Tranströmer
+ The Long Walk - Jan Zwicky
+ War at Sea in the Age of Sail - Andrew Lambert
+ Fighting Ships: Ships of the Line and Napoleonic Sea Battles 1793-1815 - David Davies
+ Don't Look Back - Karin Fossum

I'm really looking forward to reading these. :) Unsure what I'll think of Don't Look Back - I'm not familiar with that author, but it sure has been a while since I've read some Nordic Noir, so. Can hardly wait to dive into both of the naval warfare books - one of them has battle diagrams, you guys!! And as for the poetry, well. Zwicky is always a very good time, and Tranströmer's work is growing on me. (I kind of wish it were a facing translation, but we can't have everything.)

:)

Arrived in Victoria a couple of days ago. I can't believe how warm it is! I packed my autumn coat just in case, but honestly, I haven't needed it at all... I've been wearing a heavy sweater everywhere, and it's perfectly fine (in fact, a bit too warm at times).

I didn't have any plans yesterday, so I decided to see about catching the Remembrance Day goings-on. Ended up scratching that, for the most part, because it was wayyyy too busy down in that area, holy shit. So, I headed down to where the cannons were being prepared for the 21-gun salute. Good decision, I think; it was pretty cool to see those go off. :D Hella' loud even with ear plugs, though!

Aside from that... mostly for the past couple of days I've been bumming around, enjoying the good weather, doing a bit of shopping, completely failing at avoiding the used bookstore, you know how it is. (And fic writing. Lots of that. :D )

But! Tonight, I went to see Moscow Ballet's performance of Swan Lake.

I don't have much experience with ballet; I've only seen two performances in the past. One was Amadeus - I think that was performed by the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, but I'm not sure - and the other was Ballet Jorgen's Anastasia. I'm not terribly familiar with Swan Lake, but I did know the general story through pop culture osmosis.

This one uses the alternate "happy ever after" ending, which seems to be typical of Russian Swan Lake performances.

Anyway... Man, what a performance! I decided to spring for a good seat, and I'm so glad I did, because it was totally worth it. I think my brain is a bit overwhelmed from taking in so much grace at once, ahaha. Honestly, I would have watched two more hours of this.

Planning a trip specifically to see it was a Good Decision. :D

☆ [Life] This holiday weekend has been okay so far, but it ain't over yet. Every year, I wonder why we have to go to such fuss... but at least I'll get to enjoy some home made pumpkin pie with an inch of whipped cream on the top. I hope that the Canadians on my Flist had a good Thanksgiving, and that everyone else had a good regular old weekend. ;)

☆ [Travel] Can't remember if I mentioned previously, but my vacation for November is now set. Going to be in Victoria from the 11th-17th. Ordinarily not a date I would choose, but that's how the scheduling shook out. The upside: I'll be able to catch the performance of Swan Lake that I wanted so badly to see! So, I'm very happy about this. Hopefully I'll be able to do some Christmas shopping while I'm in the city, too.

☆ [Car] So... much... snow. But I'll be getting my snow tires on this upcoming weekend, so then I can stop complaining about it. Though I will probably start complaining about re-learning how to drive in the snow. ;)

☆ [NiF] Ended up signing up for the Nirvana in Fire exchange...! Hopefully I will not regret this. ;) Do I really need to add another deadline to my schedule, and in a fandom I've never written prose for? No! But I did it anyway! (Maybe there will be some poetry-suitable prompts, who knows.)

☆ [YiH] That feeling when one of the persons in a pairing you love runs to the other's aid. Insert that Good Shit meme here. Boy howdy, the recent string of updates sure has been good to me.

☆ [Reading] Current library haul:
+ Wolf Winter by Cecilia Ekbäck. Mystery/thriller/murder set in northern Sweden in the 1700s. Obviously very relevant to my interests. ;) I think I'll enjoy this one.
+ The Sacrifice Box by Martin Stewart. A pact is made, and then broken, and strange things start happening. I wanted some schlocky horror and this seemed to fit the bill, though I didn't realize it was YA until I got home.
+ The Dance Boots by Linda Legarde Grover. A collection of linked short stories by an Ojibwe author. Pretty sure someone recced this to me, but for the life of me I can't remember who.

I just realized that I haven't posted a single thing about my vacation to Ottawa. Whoops! Then again, I was rather busy. ;p Let's see....

+ The flight there was an overnight, which is unpleasant because I hate trying to sleep on planes, but... gotta' say, it's a pretty good way to maximize one's time.

+ As a refresher, the reason I decided to go to Ottawa in the first place is because the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau had a special exhibition about the Franklin expedition. WELL... the Franklin exhibit was a bit underwhelming, probably because most of the information was familiar to me, even if I hadn't seen any of the artifacts in person. But I'm still glad that I went, because otherwise, I would have always wondered. However! There was also a special exhibit on medieval Europe. Tons of neat things, including some really cool tapestries, and one of the Lewis chessmen. That was really neat to see. So, I don't mind at all that it was a bit of a long walk to Gatineau from downtown Ottawa. ;)

+ Speaking of the history museum though, holy shit, is it ever huge. I only saw half of it. Would have gone back again to see the rest, but never got around to it. It's just - seriously enormous. (If you are going to walk down there from Ottawa... make sure you eat. Um. Not that I made the decision of walking there and back on a warm day and with an empty stomach or anything. I'm not terribly smart. ;p )

+ The National Gallery was also very impressive. They had a nice variety in there - tons of Canadian works, of course, but lots of European stuff too, which I didn't expect. Unfortunately, I missed the impressionists exhibit by a couple of weeks (how disappointing) but I did manage to catch the exhibit on Venetian portraiture. Very glad I was able to see Alessandro Vittoria's sculpture in person - the bust of Giulio Contarini was quite an amazing sight.

+ I met up with my dear friend [personal profile] icelilly! We've known each other for years, and it was so nice to finally talk face to face. Spent hours chatting about literally everything, and it was very, very nice. :) And now that I've told her some of my pending fic ideas, it means I'll have to write them! (Yay, accountability! ;p )

+ Also met up with my aunt and uncle. The last time I saw them, it was about 10 years ago. They were still living in Halifax at the time. It was nice to see them again. We ended up going out for supper, and it was really nice. (Mm, delicious Mexican food. Can't get that in Fort Mac.) Now, on account of this and my meeting with Lilly, I think I have fulfilled my sociability quota for the next two years. ;p

+ Did a little bit of Christmas shopping. Not as much success as I might have had in other locations, but I did find something really good for my mom, and she's the hardest one to buy for. So. I'm satisfied.

+ I went to a NAC orchestra performance! Beethoven's 7th and 8th symphonies. Absolutely lovely. It's been a while since I was last able to go to something like that, so I'm really glad that they had this concert series going on. Would have liked to attend more than one performance, but ah, well. I was in the city on the day they were doing the Pastoral Symphony, but by the time I knew about it, the only seats left for that particular performance were seventy bucks. I like Beethoven, but I don't like him that much. ;p

+ I also got a lot of writing done! Not as much as I had hoped, but still, a good amount. I finished the handwritten draft for one of the FTH fics, completed the revs for a longish SSSS thing I was working on, finished drafting a longish aRTD x SSSS crossover, cleaned up an old VME draft and posted it for shipping month, and slapped together a short Hetalia draft too. (It's Sve/Nor, so I think I'll sit on it until the prompts for their shipping week are posted.)

In all... a pretty good time. Oh, and people have been asking me about this, but - yes, I was there when the tornado hit; but it didn't touch down in the part of the city where I was staying, so I was fine.

I still have a bit of vacation time left, so I'll probably be going to Victoria in a couple of months. There is a ballet performance in November that I would love to see, but I'm unsure about the scheduling - I'll have to check a few things before I can commit to it. (But oh, if I could commit to it...!)

(And then in February, La Traviata - it's been ages since I've seen any opera in person, I would love to go - but it's a bit early to be planning for next year. But if I made that one a short trip, it would probably be easy to schedule it? I hope? HMM.)
yuuago: (DenNor - Chess)
☆ Signups for [community profile] trickortreatex are open. I'M... CONSIDERING IT. But I'm not sure! I'm going to be doing a different exchange during October; a single-fandom one arranged by the Hetalia Writers Discord. Parameters are only 500-1k words, which is manageable. But, two exchanges? Plus that zine entry on top of it - Mnhhhh best not to. (Maybe I will just put some horror requests in my HWD signup? :D?) I guess I'll just keep my eyes on the requests in case of treating.

☆ One of my former coworkers had a baby this weekend. It was very premature, and things were looking quite difficult for a while there, but it seems everything is okay now. Normally I don't knit things for my coworkers - it seems like there is always someone who's having a kid, I can't keep track of them all and if I did I would be knitting nonstop - but I kind of want to do something nice for her, since we did work together for quite a while before she left. Got to find a decent pattern, I guess... and pick up some suitable yarn before I leave on vacation.

☆ Speaking of which - yes, it's coming up soon! I'm leaving for Ottawa at assfuck in the morning on Saturday. So, looking forward to that. Though I kind of wish the getting-there part was over with; never do like that bit very much. ;) My aunt lives there, so I contacted her to ask if she'd like to meet up. Part of me wasn't crazy about the idea, but I think it's just that I'm not feeling very social today. It'll probably be better when I get there. Might see if I can meet up with Lilly too. Ah, well, whatever happens, it'll be nice to get away from home. :)
yuuago: (YiH - Sakari - Fresh air)
Ahh, well! I've booked my vacation for September. Yay, Ottawa! And now I remember precisely why I don't like going down east - those cross-country flights eat up so much time. I gave up and booked an overnight just so I won't have to spend my entire first day in the air. Ah, well, I'm sure that once I get there, it'll be nice. :D

Maybe I'll even get a chance to meet up with Icelilly... That would be great. I'll have to see if she's up for it.

It's been drizzly and cold on and off all weekend. Not so great from a "spending time outside" perspective, but we sure do need some rain...!

Aboxthecolourofheartache has given me carte blanche to do poetry based on scenes in "Inference"*. 8) I am of course ridiculously pleased. So... we'll see where this goes. I already have one drafted, and have some vague ideas for two others.

(Whatever happened to that plan to finish the things I've already written? Out the window, maybe. ;p )

I did nothing useful this weekend, and you know, that's perfectly fine. ;p
yuuago: (Netherlands - Coffee)
Hmmm....

Looks like I might be going to Ottawa this summer! Or in September, perhaps. More likely September, in fact, since one of my pals has informed me that July/August in Ottawa is Hellish.

The Canadian Museum of History is going to be hosting the special Death on the Ice Exhibition - artifacts from the Franklin expedition, including pieces recovered from the wrecks of HMS Erebus and Terror! Whoo!

(Okay, it's in Gatineau, not Ottawa, but it's just across the river, and you can literally walk there. So. Let's not get technical. ;p )

...And of course there are plenty of other things to do down east, but that's the main draw for me. I don't know if there will be another opportunity for me to see this stuff any time soon, because the exhibition will be going outside the country once it's finished in Gatineau.

Going to places that I've never visited before is always nerve-wracking, even when it's in my own country, but somehow I have the feeling that this would turn out all right.

Still not 100% decided on this, buuut it does seem like a pretty good idea to me. I'll have to poke around a bit for more information. At least I have plenty of time to decide.

If any of you have been to Ottawa, feel free to throw suggestions at me re: what to do there, if there was anything in particular that you thought was super cool. I have actually been there before, but I was 13 at the time, it was during a hellish school trip, and the only thing that I remember is that the stained glass in the parliament buildings was very pretty.

So, I'm reading a book on the subject of soft tissue fossilization in dinosaurs, and while it has been a good refresher of some basic stuff that I've forgotten, and given me some neat information about soft tissue in palaeontological and archaeological finds, it has also brought to my attention something that I vaguely knew about but rarely gave any thought.

Basically: amateurs can volunteer for digs. Experience is welcome but not necessarily required.

In other words, normal people who do not have any experience in palaeontology can apply to volunteer to go dig up dinosaurs, and sometimes their applications are accepted.

Theoretically, the only thing stopping me from doing this is the issue of transportation. Well, and applying and getting accepted, but like, you know. There's nothing to stop me from applying, at least. But transport-wise, obviously, you need to be able to get there yourself. But aside from that... well. Nothing stopping me from doing it, provided I had the cash saved up for the trip and could get time off from work. Normal people can do this, and this is something I could do. Wow.

It's entirely possible that I wouldn't actually like that sort of thing - you spend long hours doing back-breaking work in the hot sun - but it sure would be an interesting experience.

The thing is, when it comes to neat things like this, I'm so used to the idea of, well - "People like you can't do that, and you shouldn't even bother trying". But I can. I'm capable of doing this! Normal people can do this! Some rando from Fort Mac can do this! Theoretically.

Something to consider in a few years, maybe. I'm not going to do any research into the thing for now, since it isn't a possibility yet, but. Eventually, maybe, if I decide that I want to look into it.

...OR you know, I could just go to Drumheller and do some hiking in the provincial park, that would be nice too. ;p

Only thing is, I need to get that damn license first. WELL, OKAY, FINE.

(Apologies if this posts twice; DW has been giving me tons of errors this evening.)

* Oh gods. My feet hurt. So. Bad. Not because of ill-fitting shoes; I've just done... so much walking... Damn, it's too bad I didn't take the phone with PokeGo on it; I'd have hatched a million eggs today. Upside: I did some wandering, discovered some new coffee shops away from the busiest part of downtown (and therefore more likely to be reasonably quiet), and also came across a grocery store, which certainly does mean some good things for my wallet. Mmm, fruit and granola for breakfast....

* I went to One Wave Gathering* at the legislature lawn today, and there were dance performances by various indigenous groups from the island, as well as some from the South Pacific, and it was awesome.

* Picked up a tiny cheapass sketchbook and spent some time scribbling (including while I was watching the dancers). Not actual, y'know, drawing; just some scribbly figures. It's nice. I find that if I go into things with the intent of disposing of it/recycling it after I'm finished, I enjoy it more....

* Going to go see Nomadic Tempest tomorrow evening. It's... a rock opera? Performed on a boat? Something like that. Hopefully it'll turn out to be as cool as it sounds. ;p

* I was going to write tonight, but I'm far too tired for it. ...Ordinarily I'd feel a bit bad, but I regret nothing. ;V (Well, okay, MAYBE I feel a TINY bit like a slackass for not writing anything for Synchronised Screaming two weeks in a row, but....) Hopefully I'll be able to do some scribbling tomorrow, though. The Trick or Treat signup list looks so good already, and I want to get started with writing....

* YiH: Karo showed a preview from an extra chapter* and eeeee~ <3 Ahhh Veeti's hair is doing that, you know, fwoosh, wavy thing. Loving the reminder that YiH Veeti actually is very attractive when he doesn't have that "half-dead, or maybe he just got pulled out of a swamp" sort of look goin' on... It's something that I forgot about, to the point where I even told Folie that while I love him to bits, he ain't smoochable, not so much. I CONCEDE, I take it all back, A++ would kiss.

* Imagine what a spider wearing flip flops would sound like. Just think about that for a second.

WELL, here I am in Victoria. It's nice to be off the plane, let me tell you. :V

Popped into Munro's after supper... oh gods, I need to avoid going in there. The amount of books - well, not just books, but books I would actually want to read - is overwhelming. They have an entire set of bookshelves filled with poetry! Like, not just one shelf, but the whole damn rack! So much of it! Huge! Every time I go in there, my brain can't process the amount of it. Far different from back home's "half of one shelf, and half of that selection is made up of Leonard Cohen".

Discovered that Gregory Scofield has a new collection out - Witness, I Am. Had to get it, of course. AND ALSO I discovered that he'll be holding workshops at the Festival of Authors... which I am going to miss by only a handful of days, arrrrgh goddamn. If only I could extend my stay!

See, his writing means a lot to me - when I read Singing Home the Bones, it was the first time I'd come across a 21st-century poet whose work I actually liked. Before that, it was all... [/vague handwave] Epics and medieval stuff. The Harley lyrics, Homer's works, the Kalevala, Beowulf, that sort of thing. But there was something about Scofield's work, I can't put a finger on what.

So, that's a disappointment. But oh, well. Maybe some time another opportunity will present itself.

Regardless, I'm looking forward to doing glorious nothing for an entire week. It'll be nice to just do whatever I please and not have to think about... anything at all.

Also: my room has a proper teakettle. I'm delighted. No sad mediocre microwaved tea this time. Brilliant. <3
yuuago: (BlackJack - Snap)
Ugh, no matter what, every time I'm about to go someplace, I tend to be filled with these feelings of... "This is so inconvenient, I really don't feel like going, I'd rather just stay here".

Which is stupid.

I just really, really hate packing... and airports... and so on. Then again, I don't know many people who do enjoy all that.

(And it's always so hard not to overpack, too. Self, you're only going for a week, keep that in mind.)
yuuago: (DenNor - Be with you)
You know it's time for bed when you accidentally put the relationships in the characters field... Maybe it's best to just, like, not let me near Ao3 ever. (Or maybe I could get some proper sleep for a change -- nah.)

Today was utterly nasty. Windy and cold and rainy all at once. I took one look outside, and decided to not even bother going out or anything, because it looked seriously unpleasant. (And now I feel like a lump, but, well. That's how it goes.)

Finished my letter* for [community profile] trickortreatex. You guys should all consider doing this one~ I love this exchange so much! Mmm, that bite-sized minimum wordcount. Delicious. :D

Leaving for vacation this Friday... Aahh! It'll be nice to go somewhere, even if it's somewhere I've been before - well, Victoria is always nice. Haven't decided what to do when I'll get there, but I'm sure I'll figure it out. Though, considering so much of the Pacific coast is on fire, I'm a little worried about smoke. Not physically, but well - ugh, I'll just deal with it somehow if I see/smell it, I guess.

On an unrelated note, I made a crustless quiche thing yesterday, and it turned out really good. ...I had supervision for it, but eh. At least it turned out. ~Learning experience~ and all that. We were going to do another one of my recipes from that book of Fruilian cooking, but we took one look at the time/temperature suggested for baking the frittata, and were like "... this seems off". Sooo... we used one of mom's recipes instead. I might dump it here later - going to have to look for the card first.

Dziady etc; pagan stuff )
yuuago: (Frozen - Reindeers are better)
Well, I've set aside my time off to go to Victoria in September. That'll be nice. It'll be great to just be somewhere else for a while. I'm looking forward to doing absolutely nothing. Relatives keep pressuring me to go somewhere that I haven't been before instead, but... honestly, I can't think of anything that would be more stressful right now than to go somewhere new.

I have Friday off, and I'm really looking forward to getting my Rare Slash exchange fic finished. Man, exchanges are fun, but I'm feeling a little bit burnt out. So, I'll just noodle around with my own stuff for a while after this.

Though, now that I think of it, it might be nice to do a fic trade or two. (Or trade fic for art, perhaps.) I like the way me 'n Grey did it once or twice - decide on a fandom + pairing, and then throw each other three short prompts or so, and pick one. Can't remember what our minimums were - 500 words + 2 weeks to write? Not sure. Anyway, it was fun and stress-free, though I wouldn't want to do it very often.

Lately, I've been listening to an audiobook of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince... This is one of those HP novels that I read only once (unlike the first three), so I'd entirely forgotten the plot. It's kind of fun to experience it for almost-the-first-time. From what little bit I do remember, I recall finding the interaction between Harry and Dumbledore kind of dull, but this time around I'm really appreciating the scenes they have together, sifting through old memories in the pensive. There's just something about those bits, hard to put my finger on precisely what I like about them... It might be, I think, that they both obviously need something from each other, and it's nice to see them actively working together on something.
yuuago: (A Redtail's Dream - Be with you)
Nice little things: Date cookies, peppermint tea, and days that look cold outside but are actually surprisingly tolerable.

Considering where to go for my vacation this year. Last year, I'd been thinking about Seattle, because one of my friends lives there, and it'd be nice to visit. But, uh, any trips to the USA are on hold until further notice, for obvious reasons. So, now I don't know. Victoria again? Halifax, maybe? I miss Nova Scotia an absolutely ridiculous amount, but it's such a hideously long flight. :V We'll see. It'll have to be somewhere in Canada, at any rate.

I had thought I wouldn't be able to make my writing goal for the month, but thanks to [personal profile] idleleaves and Synchronised Screaming, I managed to break through it. Feels good! Speaking of which, Synchronised Screaming is a weekly flashfic-a-thon type thing for some fandoms that a bunch of us are into - currently it's SSSS, aRTD, and YOI. Details over here.

I ended up writing two Hannu/Anssi fics for that, which isn't a pairing I would have ever thought of, but somebody prompted it and I was interested. That, combined with the Joona/Anssi prompts that someone put up for PBAM, make me feel like aRTD fandom is telling me to write some Anssi fic. xD Which is fine with me. Poor guy, his sister Riikka gets so much fic written about her, and he has... hardly anything. Well, we'll see what happens. And maybe I'll get some ideas for gen plots, who knows. That would be nice. Right now the only possibility I can think of is some vague slice-of-life stuff. And I suppose there's always the SSSS apocalypse crossover too, but eh.

Oh, I just remembered - for those of you who use [community profile] ssss, I've posted an idea on the discussion post re: opening up a new disco post. So, please let me know if you have any thoughts on that.

☆ Today was relaxing. I didn't do much. It's probably for the best. Walked around a bit to enjoy the weather, did some windowshopping... found a lovely little cafe that I've passed by a lot of times, and I wish I'd gone in sooner, because they have amazing sandwiches and their coffee is wonderful. And they serve it in mugs as big as soup bowls. That is exactly to my taste. xD So... I spent some time writing there, obviously. The fic I'm working on is more like Extruded Fic Product, but if I keep banging away at it, maybe something will happen.

☆ Was poking around one of the many used bookstores here, and ended up walking out with... a cookbook. Which is surprising, because I hardly ever cook (make desserts, yes, but cook things for supper... no. tl;dr me + cooking = incompatible with the way my family schedules mealtimes). But anyway, it's a book of simple Italian recipes, and they look relatively idiot-proof - but what actually drew me was that the author shares a surname with my mother's side of the family. It's not one I stumble across often, because it's a pretty rare name. Anyway, after investigating, we're probably not distant relations, alas (he's from central Italy, whereas my family is northern - from Friuli) but that's all right. xD Maybe some time I can try making some of these things... it has instructions on how to make home-made spaghetti sauce, and it looks like something I could do. I don't like anything with tomatoes in it, but I think my mother will love it. AND ALSO it has stuff on how to make pannacotta... and polenta... and omg I want to learn how to make gnocci, it looks time-consuming but relatively painless. HMMmmm.... I'm going to have to try some of these on the few days when I'm left to my own devices.

☆ Did some geocaching this evening. Tried one; didn't find it. And it should have been a REALLY EASY find, too. Hell, someone even found it yesterday, according to the logs. But it just... wasn't there? It's possible that it got muggled, but. What even. I might try again later in the week, just to make sure. I guess I could have poked around more thoroughly, but there were people nearby (not too close, just close enough) and I didn't want to look like a weirdo feeling up stone walls. (Wat.) I ended up going to look for a different cache in the evening, to make up for the lack of success earlier. At least I managed to find that one.

☆ Speaking of geocaching, man, some people sure do have Opinions on urban microcaches. And by that I mean, a lot of those Opinions boil down to "they suck". Well, screw that. I mean, most of my finds so far have been microcaches, with one exception, so it's not like I'm in a position to make an informed opinion. But the thing is, this isn't the kind of hobby that everyone can do easily. A lot of larger caches require transportation to not-easy-accessible areas, as well as hiking. Now, I don't mind hiking, but transport - that's an issue. Also, there's the issue of seasonal access - in Fort Mac, for example, a lot of the larger caches are located in the woods, and while a walk in the woods is pretty nice, it's not exactly something you want to do alone during bear season. Hell, last week, I was looking for a cache in the bush in the downtown area, and when I came out, I saw a Bear Warning sign that I'd missed when going in. (It was kind of funny, actually. Warning not just for a bear, but a Problem Bear. I mean, obviously it's a "problem" because it's hanging around by apartment buildings, but it reads more like it's a bear that Has Issues. xD) ...So uh, basically what I'm saying is, in my totally-newbie-ish opinion, urban microcaches are great because they give people a safe and accessible way to enjoy a hobby that they might otherwise not be able to participate in. Not to mention, it's a good way for beginners to figure out if they'll enjoy it at all.

☆ I had a Pleasant and Civilized Conversation with a stranger today. Who happened to be really hot. And he had really nice, really loooong hair. He looked like a prince and I felt like an awkward potato. +10 points to me for being social, though. This is not something that happens often. (Not to mention that if someone talks to me back at home, it's usually because they want money, or cigarettes, or to convert me to something. No wonder I don't usually talk to people.)

☆ Meeting Aki tomorrow. I'm gonna die. (No, I won't.) ...I'm gonna put my foot in my mouth 3652346 times. (Yes, probably.)

☆ Arrived in Victoria. Whoo! It's nice to be here again, even if the weather was shit today - far too windy. Aki arrives on the 23rd... I have no idea what I'm going to do on the 22nd. I've been feeling kind of tired and sore lately (tl;dr: too much walking, also general frustration with the universe) so if the weather is nice, I might just find a sunny spot on that big lawn outside the Legislature to plunk myself down and knit and write and read and do nothing all day.

☆ THAT FEELING when you're trying to wind yarn into a ball from the skein and it just ends up as... yarn spaghetti. Why. Why does this happen. (Shhh I know why it happens, I'm just grumping.)

☆ Writing-wise, managed to slap down some words today. Not much, though. And it was just OC stuff (Suvi's POV, oddly enough... I'm finding it hard to get into her head so far. She's tricky). Hopefully will get some other things done... I really need to give that Rarepair Exchange assignment another read-through; I mean, yes, it's done, but it... needs it. We'll see. Plus, treats, I want to write treats for this one user... argh, we'll see. Not to mention the mountains of unfinished stuff that I have in that wip folder. x_x Ffffu.

☆ Yiiikes, my feet hurt like hell. I think I overdid it today. I kind of hope that tomorrow it will rain, just so I won't be tempted to go out for a long walk again. Or... maybe I could just do a short one... (I don't know my limits.) x_x My knees hurt too. Yeah, I... yeah. Tomorrow, I'll just stay home.

☆ Think I almost have exchange fic #2 finished. I just need to figure out how to end it. After that, well, it's mainly just linework, you know, revising things. One of them is a different format than what I usually would write, so it might be a little bit more challenging, but I don't think it will be too much of a problem. ...I really need to get these done, though. Hopefully I'll have them in by the end of the week. That's the original due date; I know it was pushed back due to the delay in getting assignments out, but it's probably best if I adhere to it.

☆ Only a couple of weeks until I leave for Victoria! I'm so looking forward to it. <3 Hmm, I should probably see if there is anything in particular that I want to go to... I'm sure that Aki has lots of things that she wants to see, but it doesn't hurt to have extra ideas as well. Plus, I will be a few days by myself there, so it'll be useful to have some idea of how to spend that time. I remember that I really enjoyed those ghost walks; maybe I should do that again. The stories will probably be the same, but it's nice to have something to do in the evenings, because usually I don't have any idea how to spend that time.

☆ All I want to do is write stuff with my OCs from the Kajaani storyline, fuuuu. But I should finish some other projects first. Including the one story that I did write with Niko in it (In which he hears something unsettling in a spirit-clogged radio and gets pretty freaked out :D) And that one Suvi/Vesa thing that I started but didn't get very far with. Oh man, those two, I love their relationship so much. Anyway. /Throws up hands!! I have too many wips.

☆ Feeling very tired and asocial lately, and to be honest I've been in one of those moods where I want to backdate every single entry, so that people will only see them if they go looking. I don't know, occasionally I just have these FEELINGS like my daily blather showing up on someone's friends feed = me shoving myself in other people's faces. Even when those people are my friends. I dunno. It's dumb. I'm dumb. But that's okay. Sometimes we have to be a little ridiculous about little things.

WELL. Today was... busy! But nice.

Ran downtown to get my passport photos taken, since I need to send in for a renewal in August. The place that does them is kind of out of the way, so that took up more time than I would've liked. But, it wasn't too bad. At least it's done. :D

While the photos were developing, I poked around online and discovered that there is a geocache in a park near the photo joint. Soooo, for about an hour, I tramped around, peeking into evergreen trees like a weirdo. :D It was good fun, though I didn't find the cache - I unfortunately don't have a GPS-enabled device, and that makes everything a lot harder. Especially when the hint is that it's in an evergreen tree... and the park is full of evergreen trees... xD And it doesn't help that I wasn't dressed for this kind of thing at all. I'll probably try again with this one, but next time, I'm going to wear proper clothing. And bug spray.

Mayyybe I'll buy a handheld GPS eventually, if I decide to stick with this. Hell, it could come in handy when travelling, too! But for now, I think I'll just make do with what I have available to me. No need to go slapping down cash when I'm new to the hobby, after all.

Anyway! I've booked all my stuff for Victoria. So, I'll be going there in late August. Fun! It'll be nice to head down there again; the weather is always so nice. Not to mention... so many bookshops. I'll also be meeting up with Aki from SSSS/Hetalia fandom, and I'm sure that will turn out great. Though we'll be in the same city, we won't be rooming together; I think it'll be nice to hang out with somebody without being glued to them. We haven't decided exactly what we're going to do together, but there's so much cool stuff in Victoria, I'm sure we'll have no problem figuring something out.

Finally managed to get to the library. <3 It feels SO GOOD to be able to go there. I'm so glad that it's open again. And of course, I picked up a few things. Had to grab some things for research... I have some vague ideas for a fic that takes place in the SSSS universe, but rather than being set in the Nordic countries, this will take place in northern Alberta, specifically in Fort Chipewyan. I'm really excited about this idea, but it's going to require a lot of research. Honestly, I'm not quite sure where to start, haa. But anyway, I picked up a couple of books about the Dene people; one is a history, and the other is centred around folklore/oral stories/personal histories. Hopefully I'll at least get an idea of where to go with the worldbuilding from here. Aaand if not... the library has plenty more. :D

Aaaand I also picked up my new Kobo today. orz Really wish I hadn't dropped my old one the way I did... I hate touch-screens, and transferring everything is going to be a pain, blah blah blah bah humbug. Though, I'll confess that I've wanted a new one for a while, because the old one was kind of a pain in the ass in some ways (nonstandard cord made charging inconvenient) but fffffu. Going to have to make double-sure that I don't drop this one, geeze.

☆ Note to self: Book flight and hotel either Friday or Saturday. And... might as well see about getting those passport photos on Saturday, possibly. Since I need to send it in for renewal pretty soon. Not that I'll need it for Victoria, but eh. It needs to get done. (SIGH) Anyway, work has said that it's fine for me to take that trip, so - it looks like Victoria will actually be happening. Nice! I'll have to ask Aki what she wants to do when we meet up, so that I can look things up and plan things out. But that can wait for a while.

☆ I keep staring at this pair of earrings on Etsy and ugh, I want them so bad. But I'm going to be spending so much money this weekend (see above, as well as getting myself a new Ereader) that - yeahhh, hard to justify it. Well. Maybe if I manage to clear off my to-do list, I'll reward myself with that. :D It isn't as if I've been doing much frivolous spending lately, anyway.

☆ I've said it before, but I'm so butthurt that I can't play Pokemon Go. SO BUTTHURT. Ahaha, I'll get over it in a week or two, probably. But I'm just so grumpy that all of my friends are having fun with something, and I can't join in. xD Maybe I should haul out my 3DS and play some actual Pokemon, though, considering I didn't finish Pokemon X. Not because I didn't like it, but well, it's a time-sink. A time-sink that makes my hands cramp up if I play it for too long. So.

☆ After throwing myself into writing last week and part of this week, I find that I'm completely out of juice, at least for the moment. x_x Wow, that was way too much. I'm never pushing myself quite that hard again. Still, I need to do my Rarepair Exchange stuff, but since there's quite a bit of time for that, I'll take a little break. It was just way too much all at once!

☆ ...There are some personal things that I want to write, but maybe on the weekend. It's all stuff with SSSS OCs, the ones that I was developing for those stories set in Kajaani. And there is one... there's a new character; his name is Vesa. And he's going to be a bit challenging to write - mind you, Niko is challenging too, and I guess they're both difficult in similar-but-different ways. (To be honest, I don't want to say too much about Vesa, at the risk of being spoilery, haha. The most important things to know are that he's a troll hunter, and he and Niko know each other very well.) Anyway, there are two stories that I want to write with him, so I'll probably be starting the shorter of the two this weekend. We'll see where it goes. I'm still trying to get used to writing original characters in fanfiction; it feels weird to give myself "permission" for it.

☆ Wrestled with EI details today. The good: I managed to get almost everything taken care of, hooray! The bad: Because I received some pay from my previous employer after the date that I applied for EI, I'm going to need to call them and sort things out. (I applied on X date, but my final paycheque didn't go through until a few days later.) It should be pretty easy to set this all straight, but uh, I hate having to call about these things, and wait on hold, and blah blah blah. But as long as I write out a script beforehand, it'll be fine. orz

☆ Shaeiira fiiiinally was able to open the package of the SSSS book that I sent her aaages ago. <3 Seeing her reaction made me so happy. Totally worth it. Though, good lord, was it ever a long wait for that package to get to her, pf. Once everything returns to normal, and postal service is restored, I'll be doing another giveaway - this time it'll be for a necklace like the one in aRTD. But that'll be a while yet, maybe in July.

☆ Only a few days before we go back home. x_x This will be... interesting. On the one hand, I want to be back home. On the other hand, the city is going to be a mess, and I don't know if I want to drive through that again. Ugh. Well, there's nothing to be done about that.

☆ SPEAKING OF INTERNET, I don't know if I'll have internet in Fort McMurray, because our internet provider doesn't have detailed information about which areas have restored service and which are still waiting for it. Soooo I might disappear for a while. ;p Upside: I have downloaded sooo many public domain horror movies, I'll have no problem keeping myself occupied when I do have free time. Films + knitting, yay!

☆ Depending on how re-entry goes, and what ends up happening with work, I might possibly end up travelling somewhere in August - either to Calgary or Victoria, not sure which. BUT that is very fuzzy not-sure stuff yet; it's just an idea that's on the table. Maybe. If things go smoothly.
