yuuago: (NiF Cast - Wang Kai - Cozy)
Man, I really need to watch more stuff with Wang Kai in it. I watched Railroad Tigers tonight, which was a so-so movie but had lots of the kind of things I enjoy, so I'm kind of more inclined to like it than I otherwise would be. And he was in it, playing a badass sharpshooter who reluctantly joins a group of kinda' failtastic saboteurs, and... yeah, I was riveted whenever he was onscreen. Dude's magnetic. And incredibly hot. Holy shit.

He just has this incredibly gorgeous face and these most intense eyes and I just. ???? I can't handle it, man.

I suppose I could just rewatch NiF - I mean, considering he's part of the main cast, I'd get to drink my fill. Then again, I would say he looks hotter without the historical wigs. ...On the third hand, in NiF he wears armour sometimes, and oh my god is he ever sexy in armour. Plus I do enjoy Xiao Jingyan a lot as a character, so that helps. idk.

Guess I'll check what the library has, and then revisit NiF if I can't find some other way to satisfy this thirst. (Or make a note to do so and then forget, which is more likely, but. Anyway.)

[edit]

Oh, or maybe I should watch Disguiser! I've heard he's good in that! (Most likely I will not because picking up a new series is... not something I have patience for right now. But.)
yuuago: (Nirvana in Fire - MCS x JY - Tea)
I suddenly remembered how, while I was still active in Nirvana in Fire fandom, I came across spoilers for NiF2.

At which point I recoiled and shrieked, "Jingyan would never!"

...Were I not so attached to the characters in this series, I probably would have been like "Yeah, as far as tropes go, that's a reasonable direction to take the narrative. Cyclical, as he grows in power the son becomes as much of an asshole as the father, etc".

But I am firmly attached to the characters, and so I still find myself thinking, "Fuck no!"

...Yeah, I'm probably never going to watch NiF2. (Though the main reason is that all of the characters that I love aren't in it!)

+ For the Rarepair Hell Weekend* I wrote some short and fluffy Hetalia NO/RO (DW/Ao3). Originally, I was worried I wouldn't find time to put anything together, but I got stuck in a cafe during a downpour and figured I might as well write while I waited it out. :'D Yay!

+ [community profile] seasonsofdrabbles is running again soon. Noms open now, signups open July 03. I think I'll be sitting this round out, but I'm happy that it's running!

+ [community profile] femslash_kink has finished; both fics and creators are revealed... and I only just realized, glancing through the fandoms list, that there's a NiF fic in there (and it's Nihuang/Xia Dong, ooo!). This is my note to self to go read it when I have time! (This isn't a rec, I haven't looked at it yet, but damn has it been a while since I read any NiF and I got excited.)

+ And speaking of femslash, [community profile] femslashafterdark has signups open until July 04, if you're interested in mature/explicit works. ...I am really intrigued by some of the TMA pairings in the tagset, but nobody has requested them so far, aughhh! I would love to see what the person who nommed those has in mind. (Helen/Melanie, yes!!)
yuuago: (NiF Cast - Wang Kai - Cozy)
+ I woke up to snow today! It didn't stay, but it was reassuring. We usually have snow before Halloween, so getting into November without it has been making me feel antsy.

+ Found a wooden plant stand down by the complex's dumpster. It's all scratched up, but structurally sound. Mine now! It doesn't really match any of my furniture, so I'm thinking that maybe in the summer I'll see if I can paint it. For now, it's serving as a vertical shoe rack in my closet. Additional plants are a future project. (I'm running out of window space! ;V )

+ I uploaded all of my Nirvana in Fire poetry to Ao3. It made the most sense to post it as a series, so voila: The Book of the Moth. This has been in the plans for a while, but I was dragging my feet. Anyway! Doing this reminded me of how much I love NiF. I'm due for a rewatch. And looking forward to reveals for this year's NiF exchange too! (Nov 20th this year). Hopefully I'll be able to set aside time to read after all the works are visible.

I received two lovely Nirvana in Fire fics for [community profile] fandomgiftbox. :D

It's always such a delight to ask for something super-rare and actually receive it. <3

Please go check these out if they're your kind of thing.

Both of these are by ConvenientAlias.

Recognition.
1.4k, G. Lin Shu & Meng Zhi. Partially epistolary.
Author's summary: Meng gets to know Lin Shu twice. Sort of.

I will come to you like the first snow.
1.2k, G. Unreqiuted Jinghuan -> Mei Changsu (!!! <3 ).
Author's summary: Jinghuan is left waiting at the gate, not even admitted in yet. Standing in shallow snow. There aren’t many people who could get away with such an insult to a seven-pearl prince, but Jinghuan doesn’t mind it coming from Mei Changsu. For one thing, his poor health is entirely genuine; anyone could tell that from an hour with him. For another, he’s the Qilin talent. If he wants to play hard to get, who’ll stop him?
Jinghuan is always willing to indulge him.

The Nirvana in Fire exchange is running again this year. Signups are open from now until the 22nd.

This year, it's being organized on Dreamwidth. Details over here: [community profile] nifexchange

I won't be signing up this year because I'm way too busy, but maybe some of you will be interested. :D I'll definitely be checking out the results, at least.

My work in this fandom isn't very suited to exchanges, anyway. Somehow, it is the one canon that I can only write poetry for. Prose is way too hard!
yuuago: (Nirvana in Fire - Prince Yu - Waiting)
If you like canon-divergent Mei Changsu/Xiao Jinghuan, check out the Wind and Rain series. I just read both parts that are currently available, and oh boy, am I ever enjoying it.

Summary from part 2 describes it well so far:

In a moment of enlightenment, before rushing into organizing an uprising, Prince Yu came to Mei Changsu with the plea to save him from himself. And he was given what he asked for. And after this event, things went a little differently. Or not a little.

This series is a translation of a novel-length fic in Russian; the translation is by Moon_Lovers_Lover, and the original is by Eswet; you can read the Russian version on Ao3 here or on Ficbook here. It's in 14 parts, and only the first two parts are translated at this time. But even though the English translation is a wip, the first two parts are very enjoyable.

Bless Russian fandom for taking an interest in this rarepair. I'm so glad that somebody is translating this work. :') Like, this one is not my favourite pairing in NiF, but it's one that I find very interesting, and people so rarely explore it...! So to know that there's a 82k (!!) fic out there about it, and that somebody is actively working on putting into a language that I can read... aahh, it makes me so happy.
yuuago: (Nirvana in Fire - MCS x JY - Tea)
So! There is a Nirvana in Fire comm on DW: [community profile] nirvana_in_fire

Might be good for those who enjoy DW-style discussion/meta and so on. :D

I can't think of anything to post right now, but maybe in the future. :)

Aaaand all this reminds me that I should do a rewatch... (But I should finish RoP first.)
yuuago: (Frozen - Elsa)
I received some lovely fics for Multifandom Drabble Exchange! Hooray!

I haven't had time to go through the whole collection yet, so for now, I'll just list my gifts. :D

Stand Still Stay Silent

+ Static Closing In by Resilur. G, 400 words. (Note: this one is chaptered!) What's the harm in leaving the radio on? ...What's the point of leaving it on?

Nirvana in Fire

+ Letters by Melody_Jade. G, 200 words. So what was in the letter that Sir Su wrote to Nihuang after the Wei Zheng incident?

Hetalia

+ Cut-throat by SaraGeneris/Kanadka. 100 words, G. The popularity of the starched ruff as a fashion element hits Denmark right around the time he peaks.

Frozen

+ A Palace of Ice by Sweetcarolanne. 100 words, G. Elsa's new bride, Kamik, is very different from the people of Arendelle, but the queen and the foreign princess discover they have much in common!

+ Equal, and Opposite by thedevilchicken. 500 words, rated 18+. Elsa meets someone like her, who's not like her at all.

+ Ungloving by ConvenientAlias. 200 words, rated T. "I want your gloves off."

Don't know where I left my brain today, but that doesn't matter. Have some art recs. Coincidentally, both B&W, though very different aside from that.

Nirvana in Fire, Prince Jing & Mei Changsu by Helia. Her watercolour/inkwork/paintings are always gorgeous, and this is no exception. (I'm so glad she watched this series, AHH)

Hetalia, Sweden/Norway by Kleinzarohe. Bless this artist. It's always a good day when I see they've posted something new.

Of course, I already reblogged these at tumblr, so those who follow me would have seen them already, but... They're so lovely that I felt it necessary to link them here, too. <3

☆ [NiF Ex] Wow, works have been revealed for the Nirvana in Fire exchange... 52 pieces in the collection! I'm amazed. It's going to take me ages to get through everything, and I'm delighted about that. Go take a look if that fandom strikes your fancy. As for me, I received a lovely fanart of Mei Changsu and Fei Liu! Voila. <3 <3 <3

☆ [Resolutions] I haven't put together my reading challenge list yet, but I think it'll be the same as last year - 50 books; 10 nonfiction, 10 poetry, 10 FNMI, 10 CanLit, 10 world prose fiction. And last year I had a goal of "at least 10 of these have to be books I already own", and that worked out pretty well, so... let's bump that up to 20 and see what happens! Maybe I'll finally get around to reading With Fire and Sword, that'd sure be a thing. And I could've sworn that I had an edition of Van Gogh's letters kicking around somewhere; that would be really interesting.

☆ [Knitting] Holy shit you guys, that Latvian cowl pattern was an A++ decision. Good going, me. This thing is so fun to knit; I'm delighted. It's been a while since I did anything with colourwork, and I guess I missed it. And Cascade 220 was a good yarn choice for this one, I think. The colours, though... I mean, the deep brown and burnt orange does look nice, but it also looks kind of retro; it reminds me of my grandmother's kitchen carpet, haha. Well, that's not necessarily a bad thing. ;)

☆ Anyway, I hope you all will have a safe and happy new year, and that 2019 will be good to all of us. :)
yuuago: (Nirvana in Fire - LC x MCS - Autumn)
I promised I would accompany you until the very end. You may have broken your word, but I will not go back on my promise.

Okay, cool, I'm just going to roll around on the floor, making anguished noises and crying over these two all over again. Well, honestly, every moment between Mei Changsu and Lin Chen is just perfect. I mean, I love lots of other stuff, but those two in particular - I love their dynamic so much.

...Iiiin other words, I had to rewatch some bits of Nirvana in Fire for canon review purposes, and now I'm just drowning in feelings (AGAIN).

Unfortunately, now I want to watch the entire thing from start to finish. All 54 episodes of it. But who even has time for that? NOT ME. However, if I take it one bit at a time, maybe - after all, I do have all this knitting I'd love to do, and while I prefer not to watch new subtitled things while working on a project, stuff I've seen before is fair game.

Was rather relieved to find that most of the fiddly stuff I was factchecking for my NiF exchange draft won't need to be changed, as I remembered it correctly. I still need to add a few things, but I'm not in bad shape. I'll be glad to be done with this story, though! Poetry is definitely more my medium for this fandom. Going to try to get the draft done before the end of the month - we'll see what happens.
yuuago: (YiH - Veeti - Doze)
☆ [Life] This holiday weekend has been okay so far, but it ain't over yet. Every year, I wonder why we have to go to such fuss... but at least I'll get to enjoy some home made pumpkin pie with an inch of whipped cream on the top. I hope that the Canadians on my Flist had a good Thanksgiving, and that everyone else had a good regular old weekend. ;)

☆ [Travel] Can't remember if I mentioned previously, but my vacation for November is now set. Going to be in Victoria from the 11th-17th. Ordinarily not a date I would choose, but that's how the scheduling shook out. The upside: I'll be able to catch the performance of Swan Lake that I wanted so badly to see! So, I'm very happy about this. Hopefully I'll be able to do some Christmas shopping while I'm in the city, too.

☆ [Car] So... much... snow. But I'll be getting my snow tires on this upcoming weekend, so then I can stop complaining about it. Though I will probably start complaining about re-learning how to drive in the snow. ;)

☆ [NiF] Ended up signing up for the Nirvana in Fire exchange...! Hopefully I will not regret this. ;) Do I really need to add another deadline to my schedule, and in a fandom I've never written prose for? No! But I did it anyway! (Maybe there will be some poetry-suitable prompts, who knows.)

☆ [YiH] That feeling when one of the persons in a pairing you love runs to the other's aid. Insert that Good Shit meme here. Boy howdy, the recent string of updates sure has been good to me.

☆ [Reading] Current library haul:
+ Wolf Winter by Cecilia Ekbäck. Mystery/thriller/murder set in northern Sweden in the 1700s. Obviously very relevant to my interests. ;) I think I'll enjoy this one.
+ The Sacrifice Box by Martin Stewart. A pact is made, and then broken, and strange things start happening. I wanted some schlocky horror and this seemed to fit the bill, though I didn't realize it was YA until I got home.
+ The Dance Boots by Linda Legarde Grover. A collection of linked short stories by an Ojibwe author. Pretty sure someone recced this to me, but for the life of me I can't remember who.
yuuago: (Nirvana in Fire - MCS - Thoughtful)
Hmm! Someone brought to my attention that there's a Nirvana in Fire exchange (run on tumblr). Details: exchange info and signup info.

Last day to sign up is October 10th. Hmmm....

Must admit, I'm kind of interested! However, there are some things I'm not sure about.

- This exchange uses prompt claiming. I've never participated in one with that format because I don't particularly like it. So, that's kind of... eh.
- Coming up with requests is hard and my brain is mush. (Then again, maybe I can recycle some old requests from previous exchanges...)
- I'm only able to write poetry in this fandom. At least - so far. So that might limit me. Some people might not think to DNW that medium since it isn't written a whole lot, and I wouldn't want to accidentally give it to someone who doesn't like it. Additionally, there is no recommended minimum for poetry linecount, so figuring out what would be adequate is challenging.

On the upside:

+ Yay, exchange for a small fandom that I love!
+ A chance to get fanwork of my favourite characters and rarepairs, whoo!
+ Canon review will be fun - and I've been meaning to rewatch NiF anyway.
+ Nice long writing period. Works are not due until December 20th. (Bonus: Works are revealed on December 31.)

Still not sure. Well, at least I have a few days left to think about it.
yuuago: (Nirvana in Fire - Prince Yu - Waiting)
It's been a bit more than a week since works for this exchange were revealed, but I only just got around to posting about it. :) I received several lovely gifts in three different fandoms, yay! And I wrote 5 works, in 3 different fandoms. Double yay!

I'd been looking forward to this exchange all year, and I'm glad it went so well. :D It really is a fun little exchange.

Anyway, here are the works I received.

Nirvana in Fire:

Seeking Warmth by Melody_Jade. 300 words, T, Prince Yu/Mei Changsu. Back in Jiangzuo, Changsu had collected a dossier of information on each prince, including within it Prince Yu's preference for men.
Pretty much what it says on the tin and I am still absolutely floored with delight that somebody wrote this pairing for me. It's the one I decided to chance putting in my requests, but never in a million years would have expected to actually receive.

A Redtail's Dream:

A Sip of Coffee by helia7. 100 words, G, Jouko Kuikka. Jouko's morning coffee break
My favourite grumpy baker! <3 This one is cozy.

Like I've Known You All My Life by Lunarium. 100 words, G, Vuokko Tikkanen & Mrs Squirrel. “Yet it seems I’ve known you all my life.”
LOOK, someone wrote me Vuokko fic! *_* It's charming. :D

Lunch Break by Elleth. 300 words, E, Joona Kuikka/Hannu Viitanen. Lunch hour in the garden shed.
Oh boy. Here there be porn. And it is very good indeed. :)a

Stand Still Stay Silent:

Árni's Dream by Wavewright62. 100 words, T, Árni Ragnarsson & Freyja with reference to Reynir. It was just a dream. Of course.
Ah yes, just a dream... well, that's one explanation for everything. :D

Before the Memory Fades Completely by Wavewright62. 100 words, E, Sigrun & Sjødraug. When we were young, you taught me to swim here.
This one is beautifully poetic.

Whalesong by Elleth. 100 words, G, survivors outside the known world. Heligoland has been a fortress before.
Beautifully atmospheric. Also, creepy voices in the radio! *_*

Of the fics that weren't written for me, I'd also like to rec all the other SSSS works, the two Year in Hereafter works, and the one VME work that I didn't write. I'm sure there are a lot of other awesome things in the collection too, but these are the only fandoms I read stuff for.

And to keep this from being super long, I'll put the ones I wrote under a cut. :)

Hetalia x 1 + SSSS x 2 + VME x 2 )

[/stumbles over a NiF2 spoiler]

...What.

What.

Oh my god, now I know what people have been vaguely alluding to, and I agree.

Jingyan would NEVER!

Or - well, actually, speaking from a purely serious point of view, it makes for an interesting story; considering such a thing was implied/referenced/hinted at in the first series. The cyclical nature of... everything.

However. Considering this is Jingyan. I just.

Jingyan would never!

[/puts fingers in ears and goes LA LA LA I DON'T WANT TO EVEN CONSIDER THIS]

Needless to say, the second series has dropped a bit on my to-watch list... I might get around to it eventually, but it isn't high priority.

Mind you, it wasn't high-priority in the first place, considering it has a very different cast - not just different characters, but very different character types. One of the things that appeals to me about the first series is that the central characters are a bit older, a bit more mature, a bit more world-weary; NiF2 seems to have a younger group at its centre.

But. Anyway.

(Jingyan would never.)
yuuago: (Nirvana in Fire - Prince Yu - Waiting)
I went spelunking in Russian side of NiF fandom this evening and read some fanwork via googletranslate, because it's the only place where I've found XJH/MCS fic.

Tik is missing in action, so I'm just going to dump some thoughts here.

yuuago: (Nirvana in Fire - LC x MCS - Spring)
Very tired. Work is busy. Tomorrow is off; looking forward to that.

Most of the snow has melted, but it still isn't quite spring. The ice on the river hasn't broken yet. And I think there will still be a good bit of snow deep in the woods. I should go look tomorrow.

I'm glad that even if it isn't spring, we have light. It's nice to have a bit of light out when I'm walking to work. It's just so hard to get energetic about anything when the sun doesn't rise until 9 or 10AM, you know? So I'm glad that part of the year is over for now.

Have some NiF poetry in the drafts; hopefully will get one or two finished this weekend. There are two with LC that were challenging, and I kept wondering if I should splice them together or something, but I think I have it figured out now. That is, they both had to be cut down a bit. That always kills me, because usually I have to remove a line that I really like; sometimes it just doesn't work with the rest of the piece. But sometimes, you can separate it and build something else around it, so that's all right.

Other times, I end up writing five different variations of the same thing, and none of them feel quite right. With this one, there's a particular idea that I want to illustrate, but I haven't found the right way to hammer it out yet.

There is another thing I'm working on, one with MZ x MCS, and it's given me so much trouble - gone through four major rewrites and it's still not right. I think I need to remove a set of lines, maybe as many as 5 lines. MZ is hard for me to get right; he's a different sort of character from the kind I usually write, so he's challenging. (Maybe I should rewatch some of his scenes again. Oh no, what hardship.) There is another poem I want to start - same pairing; Tik gave me the seed of an idea for it but I need to think about it some more.

It's just, it's such a rare pairing, and it's one of Tik's favourites (maybe even her top favourite? I'm not sure). She loves MZ so much; she adores him. (I ADORE HIM TOO but she loves him more than I do. Like, really a lot.) So, I want to write her all the things. So many things. I wish I could draw things for her, too.

We were also talking about MZ x LC the other day, and now I'm thinking, haha, maybe I should try writing that one too. WHY NOT. (Need to find a base to slap some lines on first, but. You know.)

I kind of want to fill my genprompt bingo card* with all NiF poetry. The three I've managed to finish already were all NiF, and all poetry, so - WHY NOT try for a completely Nirvana in Fire blackout, really.

But, writing will have to wait for a different day. I'm totally beat. Weekend will be writing, and errands, and then a driving lesson on Saturday - hopefully the last one before the test.

For the moment: tea. And finishing a good book. Maybe going for a run a little bit later, or maybe watching a movie. Either way, I'm going to have to go to bed at a reasonable hour, considering how worn-down I feel. Ugh.
yuuago: (Nirvana in Fire - Lin Chen - Grace)
I have reached the "accessorize like your favourite" stage already.

WELL, OKAY....

(Nonsense, I've been wanting a broad-width ear cuff for ages, it's only - oh hell, I have no excuses.)

Cut for NiF spoilers )

I kind of want to rewatch, because there are so many details that I probably missed on first viewing, and so many scenes that I would like to go through again. But maybe that would be best reserved for another time.

Anyway. I suspect poking around for fic will happen in the near future. If any of those on my FList who have watched this have suggestions, I'm all ears. Not interested in setting-change AUs, but canon-divergent and fix-its are A-OK (and stuff that isn't AU in any way is welcome too of course). I'm open to reading about pretty much any character or pairing, because even the characters that I don't like are still interesting for the most part. And I multiship, so.... yes. (Though I admit to being partial to LC. And LC/MCS. To the surprise of nobody.)
