I found a doc with two recs from this past Yuletide exchange, and it looks like I never posted it. How odd. Well, better late than never. ;)

These are both for Historical RPF.

On the Subject of Magnetic Bodies by magikarpeggio. Shakespeare/Marlow. 1k, 13+. Archive-locked.
Summary: Marlowe has lots of feelings about Shakespeare and turns to the language of early modern magnetism to try to quantify those feelings.

Snowborne by Cân Cennau (gwenynnefydd). Karl XII & various. 1k, 13+. Epistolary + character study.
Summary: A collection of letters to Karl XII of Sweden, from those closest to him.

So, this fic by Wavewright62 has been up for a while, but I only got around to reading it just now. It's one of the best SSSS fics that I've read in a while - probably one of the ones I've liked best in general, really. I'm always down for a story set during the first months of the apocalypse, with people pulling together to get through it. :D

The title makes it seem a bit unsuited for reading in summer, but it's actually not very holiday-centric at all. It's set around the same time as the SSSS prologue, so we end up at that time of year.

Sit tight for worldbuilding, original characters, angst and tragedy, and various canon-typical things. And a whole lot of curry, of course. And it's on the long side, clocking at 27k!

Even if you aren't familiar with Stand Still Stay Silent, I think it's pretty easy to enjoy this one as a "found community during the apocalypse" story. It sets down all the relevant details pretty clearly, and since it takes place on the other side of the world from the original canon, you don't need to be familiar with any of the SSSS characters or their plotlines.

Anyway. Do check it out on Ao3 - it's a good read:

I received some lovely fics for Multifandom Drabble Exchange! Hooray!

I haven't had time to go through the whole collection yet, so for now, I'll just list my gifts. :D

+ Letters by Melody_Jade. G, 200 words. So what was in the letter that Sir Su wrote to Nihuang after the Wei Zheng incident?

yuuago: (VME - Lauren - Stars hide your fires)
I'll probably have a longer list of recs from Yuletide Exchange in a few days, but for now, I suggest taking a look at the Vatican Miracle Examiner stuff, for those familiar with that canon. Both are Roberto & Hiraga gen, and both are lovely in different ways. One is sweet, and the other has buckets of h/c. Definitely worth taking a look. :D

01: let nothing you dismay (1400 words)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Hiraga Josef Kou & Roberto Nicholas
Characters: Hiraga Josef Kou, Roberto Nicholas
Additional Tags: Emotional Hurt/Comfort, Fluff, Nightmares, Sharing a Bed, Platonic Life Partners, Yuletide Treat
Summary:

If he wakes Roberto up, he knows, Roberto will surface apologetic, self-deprecating, embarrassed. It's one of those inescapable frustrations: Hiraga knows Roberto like he knows no one else, save maybe Ryota, and Roberto, in turn, knows Hiraga so clearly - so fully - and yet he's still unable to believe, deep where it matters, that this tragic history does not make him tainted in Hiraga's eyes. He'd avert his eyes, and lie about his dreams, and carry the weight of those lies with him into the next morning, ashamed and heavy with guilt, and find a way to stay awake as late as possible the next time they share a night.

02: The Crimson and the Wool (2674 words)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: Graphic Depictions Of Violence
Relationships: Hiraga Ryouta & Roberto Nicholas
Characters: Hiraga Josef Kou, Roberto Nicholas
Additional Tags: Hurt/Comfort
Summary:

Hiraga had always though he preferred the cold, fresh air of the snow and the mountains.
Now, he would give anything for the warmth of a summer day.

Okay! Lots of Hetalia fic to post about. Both the Secret Spectres exchange and SuNor week are finished, so I can post about them. :D

For Secret Spectres, I received an awesome SSSS x Hetalia crossover fanfic by Monabela: Of silence. 1.2k, Estonia/Finland. I've wanted to read this kind of fic for ages, since the two canons seem like they would go so well together, so I'm really glad that someone who knows both of them was matched to me. :D And it has a pairing that I have liked for so long and still adore <3 So, yes, I'm happy. Might be enjoyable for those who only know APH; it's set during SSSS's prologue period, so all you need to know is that it's at the onset of what's essentially a zombie apocalypse. Unsure if it'd work for those only familiar with SSSS.

As for me, I was matched to write for [personal profile] icelilly! We talked about the possibility of this when we were hanging out together in Ottawa, so I find it kind of funny that this actually happened. ;) Anyway - Spend the night. 1.1k, 13+, Denmark/Estonia, ambiguously modern fluff. [DW backup] I've never written this pairing before, but I've written both characters often enough that it went pretty well once I got started. :) Anyway, might be one to look at if you're looking to read something happy and sweet.

I haven't read all of the Secret Spectres submissions by other people, but here is one in particular that I liked: Caveat by greendragon_templar. 1.7k, with Gilbert and Francis - and 19th-century vampirism! And bodysnatching! Ordinarily, I am not a human AU person, but this one is so fun and well-written, and I'm really glad I took the time to read it. Since it's fully AU, it can definitely be enjoyed if you don't know the source canon (I definitely recommend giving it a look).

As for Sweden/Norway pairing week, it's done! And I managed to finish something for each day*! Usually, for this kind of event, I end up having to skip one or two days. I guess it helps that I started writing ahead of time. Still, it was pretty challenging to come up with something for every day and post it on time, so I'm really happy that I managed to do it. Anyway, here are my submissions:

+ Do as you like - 1k, 18+, sex outside
+ Take it easy - ~800 words, 13+, lazy breakfast in bed
+ A certain kind of creativity - ~500 words, 18+, questionable use of magic in bed
+ As long as you like - ~500 words, 0+, a sudden snowstorm means an excuse to spend more time together
+ Currents | Ao3 version - ~750 words, 0+, January, 1917; recently-divorced neutral countries being anxious about the current state of things
+ At dusk - ~450 words, 0+, there are strange creatures lurking in Norway's forests
+ Snapshot - ~750 words, 0+, memories of time spent taking pictures in the countryside toward the end of the 19th century

So glad that I'm finished this one. :) Now I can start planning for Ned/Den week too! That one will be much harder, since I've only written that pairing a couple of times.
yuuago: (A Redtail's Dream - Together)
I've already crossposted links elsewhere, but I figured I might as well slap these recs down here too. Why not. :D

Vatican Miracle Examiner

Moonlighting by Madamefolie. Roberto/Hiraga + also Sister Anna Dolores, McGee, Julia, & Ruggieri Rutherford. 18+, 25.5k (!!).
Author's summary: A familiar face returns with a request-- and so our heroes find themselves enlisted to assist Zion's Law with an undercover mission. The terms of the assignment, however, are strictly ballroom.

My notes: The author tagged this with with: undercover missions, crossdressing, undercover as married, and action/adventure. And a few other things. Those together with the summary give a pretty good idea of what you're in for with this one. It's rated 18+, sure but, unlike most of Folie's other 18+ fic, I wouldn't recommend it for the porn; not because that bit isn't as good as it is in her other works, but because the undercover mission plot is so much fun! This fic has fucking everything - espionage, information recovery, gun fights, a really cool car chase, you name it. (And lots of McGee being his usual self, which delighted me. Everything is turned up to eleven, man.

Hetalia

Cost by Greendragon_Templar. Australia and New Zealand, directly post-WWI. G, 2k.
Author's summary: Bloodshed’s not a foreign concept, but the stain of a world war will linger. They have suffered alone before; now, they suffer as a part of a much greater whole, mourning the state of the world.

My notes: It's been a while since I last read a fic like this one, so it was a cool drink of water. Very nations-as-nations, this one.

The next two were for [community profile] raremaleslashex, which at this point of writing is still in the Anon stages. I'll add the author names in once they're revealed. :)

A Redtail's Dream

Something He Can't Break by [Anonymous author]. Puppy-fox/Hannu (Yes, really). T, 3.4k.
Author's summary: Puppy-Fox finds himself in a human body, and with a particular caveat regarding Hannu.

My notes: This was delightful. Lots of little humour, and tons of points for taking a surprising pairing and putting it together in a way that I can look at it and say "Yeah, okay, I can see that". :D Plus the characterization in this one is great.

Stand Still Stay Silent

where no other love goes by [Anonymous author]. Reynir/Onni, & Taru, Sigrun, Mikkel, Emil, & others. T, 10.7k (!).
Author's summary: The Kade in Red fled through the deep forests, and the mage followed.

My notes: Premise of this is that it takes place several years after current canon. There was a second mission, and it went... badly. This is about what happens after that. Contains temporary death, resurrection themes, and divine meddling. Reynir gets to do something cool. Happy ending. Yay! ANYWAY, what really interested me was the worldbuilding, and the background politics, and the mentions of the other mission. Well worth a read.
yuuago: (Nirvana in Fire - Prince Yu - Waiting)
It's been a bit more than a week since works for this exchange were revealed, but I only just got around to posting about it. :) I received several lovely gifts in three different fandoms, yay! And I wrote 5 works, in 3 different fandoms. Double yay!

I'd been looking forward to this exchange all year, and I'm glad it went so well. :D It really is a fun little exchange.

Anyway, here are the works I received.

Nirvana in Fire:

Seeking Warmth by Melody_Jade. 300 words, T, Prince Yu/Mei Changsu. Back in Jiangzuo, Changsu had collected a dossier of information on each prince, including within it Prince Yu's preference for men.
Pretty much what it says on the tin and I am still absolutely floored with delight that somebody wrote this pairing for me. It's the one I decided to chance putting in my requests, but never in a million years would have expected to actually receive.

A Redtail's Dream:

A Sip of Coffee by helia7. 100 words, G, Jouko Kuikka. Jouko's morning coffee break
My favourite grumpy baker! <3 This one is cozy.

Like I've Known You All My Life by Lunarium. 100 words, G, Vuokko Tikkanen & Mrs Squirrel. “Yet it seems I’ve known you all my life.”
LOOK, someone wrote me Vuokko fic! *_* It's charming. :D

Lunch Break by Elleth. 300 words, E, Joona Kuikka/Hannu Viitanen. Lunch hour in the garden shed.
Oh boy. Here there be porn. And it is very good indeed. :)a

Stand Still Stay Silent:

Árni's Dream by Wavewright62. 100 words, T, Árni Ragnarsson & Freyja with reference to Reynir. It was just a dream. Of course.
Ah yes, just a dream... well, that's one explanation for everything. :D

Before the Memory Fades Completely by Wavewright62. 100 words, E, Sigrun & Sjødraug. When we were young, you taught me to swim here.
This one is beautifully poetic.

Whalesong by Elleth. 100 words, G, survivors outside the known world. Heligoland has been a fortress before.
Beautifully atmospheric. Also, creepy voices in the radio! *_*

Of the fics that weren't written for me, I'd also like to rec all the other SSSS works, the two Year in Hereafter works, and the one VME work that I didn't write. I'm sure there are a lot of other awesome things in the collection too, but these are the only fandoms I read stuff for.

And to keep this from being super long, I'll put the ones I wrote under a cut. :)

It's tired and I'm cold, so I'm just going to jot a few things down.

☆ I'm going to be learning to write pysanky this year - do traditional eggs using wax-resist method. Making the holes and blowing out the eggs is surprisingly easy if you have the right gadgets; I hope to have several ready when it gets closer to Easter. I know that my first tries won't look very nice, but that's okay. Doing it well will take practice, and if I don't like the results, it's easy enough to just toss them and try again next year.

☆ Fic rec: Folie finally finished the long VME casefic she has been working on for months, and it's SO GOOD. Read it here: Lest the Devil Close His Fist 20.6k of mystery, thriller, and a miracle that turns out to be... well... not quite. I think it's possible to understand and enjoy this one even if you haven't seen the canon, as long as you know the basic premise of Vatican Miracle Examiner. (VME in a nutshell: two priests from the Vatican travel around to various locations in order to test whether reported miracles are genuine. There, that's the canon, now you know enough to read the story. ;p )

☆ I think maybe the weather is making me exceptionally tired... It's starting to get lighter out, but ughhh, not fast enough. Winter will be over when? (At least two months more of it. Sigh.)
yuuago: (A Redtail's Dream - Kantele)
Haven't had the energy to properly go through the ToT collection yet, but since author reveals were today, I figured I might as well drop the recs for my lovely gifts, and de-anon the things I wrote!

My gifts

☆ [aRTD x SSSS] "Journaling the Apocalypse, or whatever" by Kiraly. Tuomi-centric, set during SSSS's year 0, journal format. 0+, 1.5k. Her voice for Tuomi is perfect. <3

☆ [aRTD x SSSS] "A Haven for this Heart" by Elleth. Joona/Hannu, set during SSSS's year 0. 0+, 1.4k. I love the way she writes this pairing, and she included my love for radio communication, ahhhh <3 <3

☆ [SSSS] "We Interrupt this Broadcast" by MadameFolie. Aksel, Berit, & Sigrun L; 0+, 215 words. Bite-sized canon-typical creepy radio happenings.

☆ [Small Trolls] "First Magic" by Lunarium. Jáhko & Veeti, 0+, ~400 words, delightful bite-sized cuteness with a hint of magic. <3

What I wrote

☆ [aRTD] "Let the Strings Sing" for TereziMakara. Tuomi & Little Hare. 0+, 1k. Tuomi searches for a song that he heard in his dreams, and tries to do something that should, by rights, be impossible. Ao3 | DW

☆ [aRTD] "The Song of Tuomi, the Hare, and the Fox" for TereziMakara. Tuomi, Little Hare, & Puppy-fox. 0+, 36 lines poetry. And then a fox came along and said, "Hey kid, I have an idea for you...." Ao3 | DW

☆ [SSSS] "Sailing Back". Ása Harðardóttir for Unlos. 0+, 100 words. Ása has had quite enough. A little rest will be good for her. Ao3 | DW

☆ [SSSS] "At dusk". Aksel Eide & Sigrun Larsen for IdleLeaves. 10+, 600 words. An encounter during the early days. Ao3 | DW

☆ [SSSS] "Full Circle" for ArgylePirateWD. Sigrun/Tuuri. 10+, 600 words, canon-divergent. They made it back safe and sound, and now.... Ao3 | DW
yuuago: (Folklore - Marzanna - End of autumn)
Well, autumn sure is over. This snow looks like it's here to stay. It's also fucking cold out - I swear, I'll have to pull my fur hat out of storage before the week's over.

Still, there's such a divine feeling in the air when you're out at night, and it's pitch dark, and there's a carpet of white everywhere, and it's snowing....

I've been out of sorts - I always get that way when holidays fall in the middle of the week - but it's all right. Next week will be better.

Fic rec: Drowning by Filigranka. Slavic mythology, 300 words, Marzanna/Jarilo (and implied Veles/Jarilo), centred around this cyclical triangle of life/death/renewal. NR + CNTW. This was a late Multifandom Drabble gift, and I must say, it was a wonderful surprise... Absolutely beautiful writing here. I will note - Filigranka took all of my dark canon-specific loves and rolled them up into one tightly-packed story, and the result is amazing. And that means it won't be to everyone's taste, but it's definitely worth a read if you aren't easily squicked, or if you happen to be into erotic temporary murder.
yuuago: (Norway - Tea)
Today had a rough start; I woke up feeling hungover, with a pounding headache, even though I hadn't been drinking at all, and was nearly late for work because of it. Eesh. If I'm going to feel like that, I want to have had a wild night to go with it, you know?

But! There were some nice things today, at least.

+ I managed to survive the day without murdering anyone. I also did not die. (This is important.)

+ I saw an ADORABLE PUPPY when I was walking home from work, and I got to PET IT. Tiny black lab. Sweet and fuzzy. It looked like a plush toy. xD Didn't think to get pictures, but I think the people who were walking it live near my street, so hopefully the opportunity will arise.

+ Fic rec: Noon Raid by Minutia_R, a lovely fanpoem posted today. *_* Worldbuily SSSS goodness! Even if you aren't familiar with Stand Still Stay Silent, I think this one can be appreciated as "rebuilding society during/after the apocalypse" fiction, since it deals with original characters outside of the comic's setting. And ahhh it's so good... I love this kind of thing in this fandom.

+ I'm editing a story that I've been ignoring in the wip folder for a while, and it turns out that it doesn't need half as much rewriting as I thought. *_* It is soooo nice to not be signed up for any exchanges... I hadn't realized just how much I needed a break until now. Though a part of me does want to sign up for [community profile] femslashex... But I will refrain. xD I should just write down all of the things that I would request/offer, and then write them myself. Brilliant plan.

yuuago: (OzNZ - Friends)
✿ I just realized that, since Monday is off for the stat, and Friday is off according to my regular schedule, I'll have a four-day weekend. Nice! *_* I don't know if I'll do anything useful with this free time, but it's so nice to have - especially since the current week is a little bit stressful.

✿ Speaking of which, I stood in for the receptionist yesterday and Did Not Die. What a relief. It actually wasn't as bad as I was expecting, but I sure as hell wouldn't want to do that job on the regular.

✿ Another one of my fics has been translated into Russian! This time it was Two Under One Sky, that Mad Max+Hetalia crossover that I wrote a few years back. The translation is over here. Ahh it always makes me so happy when people enjoy my works enough to translate them. <3 <3 ...Oh, and this reminds me that I never did write a sequel to that, even though I really wanted to. I should, some time, because for some reason Max/Australia is something I need in my life, I don't know about you.

[community profile] femslashex is in the noms period until Aug 10th, if any of you are interested. I think I'm going to sit this one out, since I'm feeling a little burnt out, but the tagset is really tempting so far. Maybe I'll keep my eyes out for treats. Or things to request for ToTEx when noms open for that. (The Seventh Bride, for example... I came away from it with such a craving for Maria/Sylvie.)

✿ Oh, speaking of Ursula Vernon's works, the print version of The Raven and the Reindeer is out now*. *_*!!! I ordered it, of course, because even though I've read it in electronic form, I so much prefer print. Ahhh I loved this one, and I'm really looking forward to re-reading it.
yuuago: (SSSS - Signe)
So, fics for Multifandom Drabble Exchange were revealed today. I really, really enjoyed this exchange - there's just something about bite-sized fic that I find really fun.

I suggest checking out the main collection and treat collection if you haven't already. So many fandoms listed! *_* A little bit of something for everyone, I think.

I'm not finished reading everything I'm familiar with, so for now I'm only going to rec my gifts.

7 recs under the cut - SSSS & YiH )

Aaand anyway, here's the 5 fics I wrote, for completeness's sake. (All crossposted to [personal profile] roesslyng, of course.)
aRTD + YiH )
yuuago: (SSSS - Purrito - Twirl)
[personal profile] straightforwardly asked for some SSSS recs, and I kind of got carried away. Whups.

I'd like to stress that there are a lot of really good fics that aren't on this list. I mostly just went through my gifts + my bookmarks. Also, I haven't been reading recently, so it's 100% likely that awesome stuff was posted after, ehhh, January or so, and I just didn't see it. I also included some of my own stuff if it fit the requirements, though only what I have posted on Ao3 (as opposed to over at [personal profile] roesslyng, which is... twice the amount).

I tried to list stuff that contained at least one of the following, as requested:
-Prologue stuff
-Main cast gen and/or neat worldbuildy stuff
-Emil/Lalli romance

Prologue and Post-Prologue era )
Year 90 cast era )
Emil/Lalli Shipfic )
yuuago: (SSSS - Signe)
I posted 79 (!) individual works over at [personal profile] roesslyng over the course of 2016. This is a higher number of fics than I've ever finished in one year. The total wordcount was over 100k, which is also more than I've written in any given year. This year has been great, output-wise.

Final count: Stand Still Stay Silent (35), A Redtail's Dream (22), Hetalia (9), Yuri on Ice (4), Frozen (3), Original Work (3), Mad Max (1), Song of Achilles (1), and Rose of Versailles (1).

List under cut )

* A Redtail's Dream: Hokanniemi: Year 0 by qichi. Characters: Hannu & Paju. Gen, 1.4k, SSSS crossover. Summary: Hannu thinks it's just ridiculous, everyone talking like it's the end of the world or something.

* Stand Still Stay Silent: Another Vacation by Kiraly. Characters: Sigrun, Mikkel, Emil, Tuuri, Lalli, and Reynir. G-rated gen, 1.3k, post-canon/pre-another-expedition. I posted 48 individual works during 2015, which is more than I've written in quite a long time. This is partly due to having new fandoms, I think. ;) Though I've been posting to Ao3 more, there is still a ton of stuff that was never really posted outside of my writing journal ([personal profile] roesslyng), so if you follow my stuff, it might be worthwhile to poke around there.

Final count: Stand Still Stay Silent (17), A Redtail's Dream (09), Hetalia (17), Ex Machina (05), Kittens Game (01), Legend of Zelda (01), Original work (02)

List under cut )

So, I discovered that a script for Ex Machina exists online.

I didn't read the entire thing, but I was searching through it for Kyoko's scenes. A lot of it is pretty much the same, but there are some parts that vary a lot between the final film and the script.

-At one point, Nathan distinctly mentions that he stripped out her higher functions. ... I'm really glad that was left out of the film. I mean, she is a lot more, uh, stoic than Ava is, but I'd rather handwave that as being a Kyoko-thing, rather than a "deliberately programmed that way" thing.

-Also, in the scene with Kyoko and Ava, when they're whispering to each other: CLOSE UP to
KYOKO’S lips, we hear a hiss of static, with soft pulses of noise buried inside.
I kind of wish that had been left in. Even if it isn't words, it's something that Ava might have been able to understand... I like the idea of that.

Also, I rewatched that scene today, and holy shit, I ship them so hard. So, so hard. That scene is just intense. .... I want to make a million photosets of it.

[edit] Speaking of Ex Machina, the Trick or Treat authors are revealed, so I might as well link to the fic I wrote. ;p Have some Ava & Kyoko postcanon fix-it. Ao3 or my DW archive.

Sometimes, I look at my old stories and go, "This isn't half as good as I originally thought it was". But it's easy to feel that way when you're the one who wrote it, and it's six years after I put it together.

Someone translated one of my old Lithuania/Poland fics into Vietnamese. It was "Vernal Equinox". You can read it here: Original | Translation

It feels kind of strange looking back on it, because I don't write that way any more, and I'm not very into that pairing any more, and - well, everything about it is completely different from the stuff I write now. But, people are still enjoying it, and that makes me so, so, so happy.

Lately I've been feeling a little bit blah about writing - nothing's been coming out the way that I want it to. Maybe this is the push that I needed. :)
